Now a word from our super:
The S. M. D. (South Mountain
Division) is part of the Mid-Eastern Region of the National Model
Railroaders Association. From September to May, we meet on the 2nd
Sunday of the month. June – August there are no meetings. We meet at
the homes of members who volunteer to host the meetings, so the location
of the meeting varies. See our newsletter (the Wheel Report) for our
current meeting plans. Meetings are from 2 to 5 in the afternoon.
Each meeting loosely follows
this pattern;
- Members arrive and have
a look at the host’s layout, or at the layout plan.
- Snacks (cookies are very
popular in SMD) and soft drinks are provided by the host, members
are expected to contribute some $ to offset this cost.
- Many times the host will
encourage members to take a throttle and run a train.
- The division
Superintendent calls the group to order and invites the host to tell
us about some aspects of their model railroad.
- Usually we’ll then have
a speaker (most times a member of SMD) give a clinic – which is talk
on some model railroad related topic. These vary from someone just
speaking to the group, to PowerPoint slide shows, to model building
tips, to hands on lessons in “how to make rocks,” for example
- The Superintendent then
reviews any news that effects the group or any old business that
needed follow up from prior meetings
- The Superintendent asks
if there are any new items the members want to bring up.
- The official meeting
ends.
- If time allows, back to
the train room!
The SMD
includes the following counties in Maryland;
Allegany, Frederick,
Garrett, and Washington; in West Virginia; Berkeley and Jefferson; In
Virginia; Clarke and Frederick; and in Pennsylvania; Bedford, Franklin,
Fulton and Somerset.
We have many talented
modelers in this division, and many impressive home and club layouts.
You’ll find SMD members who hate wiring, but some love it. Some hate
doing scenery, some love it. Some hate dong track work, some love it.
We’ve got modelers in
G,
O, S, HO, N and narrow gauge versions of each
scale. You’ll find the members of the SMD to be a relaxed bunch who just
like model railroading and enjoy the chance to meet with folks who share
that interest. Members of the SMD have been a great help to me in
getting my model RR closer to the point I’d like it to be. I encourage
you to come to one of our meetings. You don’t have to be a member,
guests are welcome.
